This past Friday, a massive cyber-attack spread globally in only a matter of minutes, impacting an estimated 200,000 users in 150 countries.
Rest assured, if you have VIPRE Advanced Security or VIPRE Endpoint Protection installed on your device, you are protected from all known variants of Wanna-cry and other zero-hour malware. Previous versions of VIPRE, including VIPRE Antivirus Business and VIPRE Business Premium will also protect from all known variants, with signature updates arriving within a couple of hours of the emergence of any new strain, thanks to our active global network of ThreatNet monitoring and industry sharing partners.
The New York Times reported Sunday that this attack is likely far from over, with an updated version of WannaCry expected in a second wave.
As we learned Friday, the initial attack vector was through spam email, often under the guise of invoices, job offers and other lures sent to random email addresses. Within the email is a .zip file and once clicked, that initiates the WannaCry infection. Microsoft released a patch for this particular vulnerability in March and we recommend that everyone install this patch immediately, even VIPRE customers.
For information on how best to stay protected as well as lessons learned from these new ransomware variants, please see our blog post from Friday evening, where we detailed the importance of patch management, advanced machine learning detection, network protection and more.
IN THE EVENT OF AN INFECTION:
There are no known methods to recover from this ransomware to date, but monitor the VIPRE blogs for more information as it becomes available. We also recommend backing up systems frequently.
